Ginger Enhances Antioxidant Activity and Attenuates Atherogenesis in Diabetic Cholesterol-Fed Rats
نویسنده
چکیده
Ginger effects on blood glucose, lipids, oxidative stress and early stages of atherogenesis in diabetic cholesterol fed rats were investigated in the present study. Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into three main groups of eight animals each. The animals of the first group were fed on a commercial pellet diet and served as control. Diabetes was induced in both second and third group of animals by intraperitoneal injection with one dose of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg) and fed on the same pellet diet mixed with 0.5% cholesterol. The animals of the third group were daily administered by ginger (25 mg/kg body weight) using oral gavages. After six weeks of the experimental period, different blood lipid parameters, lipid peroxidation and anti-oxidant activities were analyzed in all groups. Samples of aorta were obtained to investigate the vascular wall changes using electron microscopy (EM) studies. The results revealed that ginger produced a decline in blood glucose and significant decrease of triglyceride levels, but could not restore the increase of cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels of diabetic cholesterol-fed rats. Ginger administration resulted in significant reduction in malondialdehyde concentration and significant elevation in total plasma antioxidant activity. Furthermore, EM studies revealed that ginger ameliorated the cellular changes of aortic wall induced in diabetic cholesterol-fed animals. The data of the present study indicated that antiatherogenic effect of ginger could be attributed to its vital role in regulation of per-oxidation process, antioxidant activity and inhibition of monocyte migration and interaction accompanied with endothelial dysfunction.

Effect of Ginger, Curcumin and Their Mixture on Blood Glucose and Lipids in Diabetic Rats
The present study was conducted to evaluate the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant effect of curcumin, ginger and their mixture in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Material and Methods: Male albino rats (n=35) weighing (180-195 g) were divided into two main groups; first group: negative control (n=7) fed standard diet and second group: diabetic rats (n=28), which divided equ...
متن کاملAnti-diabetic and anti-oxidant effects of Zingiber officinale on alloxan-induced and insulin-resistant diabetic male rats.
This study was designed to investigate the hypoglycaemic and anti-oxidant effects of Zingiber officinale on experimentally induced diabetes mellitus using alloxan and insulin resistance. Aqueous extracts of raw ginger was administered orally at a chosen dose of 500mg/ml for a period of 4 weeks to alloxan-induced diabetic and insulin resistant diabetic rats. The experimental rats exhibited hyper...
متن کاملMulberry Leaf Extract Attenuates Oxidative Stress-Mediated Testosterone Depletion in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats
Background: It has been proposed that oxidative stress may contribute to the development of testicular abnormalities in diabetes. Morus alba leaf extract (MAE) has hypoglycemic and antioxidant properties. We, therefore, explored the impact of the administration of MAE on steroidogenesis in diabetic rats. Methods: To address this hypothesis, we measured the serum level of glucose, insulin, and f...
متن کاملEffect of Enalapril on ACE Activity , Blood Pressure , and Body Weight in Cholsterol - fed Rabbits
To investigate the mechanism by which angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition attenuates atherogenesis, we have studied the effects of a nonsulfhydryl ACE inhibitor, enalapril, and an angiotensin receptor antagonist, SC-51316, in cholesterol-fed rabbits. After 3 mo of enalapril treatment (10 mg/kg per d, p.o.) the percent plaque areas in the thoracic aortas of treated animals were signif...
متن کاملEffect of the Combination of Gelam Honey and Ginger on Oxidative Stress and Metabolic Profile in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Sprague-Dawley Rats
Diabetic complications occur as a result of increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to long term hyperglycaemia. Honey and ginger have been shown to exhibit antioxidant activity which can scavenge ROS. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antidiabetic effects of gelam honey, ginger, and their combination. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 major groups which c...
